Stepping Out Program

Stepping Out Program

The Royal Commission into Childhood Sexual Abuse has raised awareness of a terrible side to humanity but, at the same time, shown the resilience of those who speak out. While the statistics are very disturbing – 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused and 1 in 7 boys - there is help out there with organisations such as the Stepping Out Program Inc.

Stepping Out is a small, not-for-profit, registered charity that was established to support the process of recovery for women and men who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The program seeks to empower survivors to achieve independance within their community through support, case management, counselling, group programs, information, advocacy and referral.

This community organisation is particularly important to AFYF as Carron volunteers her time and expertise on the board as treasurer.

Stepping Out receives most of its funds from the state government via a lead agency.  Unfortunately, government funding does not cover everything, so generating income through sponsorships, other grants & donations are key to enabling this service to continue supporting survivors as they work through their recovery.

These extra funds are used to provide group programs to survivors such as Trauma Sensitive Yoga, Money Matters, Rediscovering Life or Power of Possibilities.  All are designed to give survivors tools to draw on so they can more fully participate in life.
